IT STARTS ON FIELDS IN DAVIS

Perseverance.

That’s the word one young player gave us after her game ended 4–4.

It had been the kind of game kids love. Goals went back and forth. Momentum shifted. Teammates cheered from the sideline. She won balls, found teammates with passes, got knocked down, made mistakes, and kept going.

After the final whistle we asked her two questions.
Did you have fun?
“Yes.”

What did you learn?
She thought for a moment, then said, “Perseverance.”

She may have seen that word on a poster or a worksheet before. On Saturday she connected it to something real: getting knocked down and getting back up, making a mistake and trying again, staying in it when the game didn’t go her way, and having teammates and a coach right there with her through it.

That’s why the way we approach youth sports matters.

Yes, kids learn to pass, dribble, defend, and score. They also learn how to respond when things get hard. They learn that mistakes are part of the process, that setbacks don’t define them, and that they can keep going even when the outcome isn’t certain.

Those lessons don’t stay on the field. They follow kids into classrooms, onto playgrounds, into friendships, and eventually into challenges none of us can predict.

A 4–4 result might not look like much in a standings table. But a kid walking off the field knowing she can persevere? That’s a win worth building around.

And for us, it starts on fields in Davis.
